Over the festive period, many people end up with extra packaging and, potentially, more food waste than usual.

Remember – we can all play our part by recycling material in the correct bins, and also by using wrapping paper and cardboard tubes that can be recycled.

The easy test for wrapping paper is that if you scrunch it up and it stays scrunched – and has no glitter or foil – then you can recycle it.

The advice is to check the collection dates over the holiday period

On Arran these changes are:

The advice is to put your bin out for 7am as the actual time of collection might vary during the holidays.

And if adverse weather affects your area the Council will return to collect your bin when possible.

Please note that bulky collections (special uplifts) will stop on Friday, December 22 and start again on Monday, January 8.

Arran commercial waste collections due on Christmas Day and Boxing Day will be on Wednesday, December 27, except for Brodick collections which will be uplifted on Boxing Day.

Commercial waste collections due on January 1 and 2 will be uplifted on January 3, except for those in Brodick which will be collected on January 2. Residents can phone the Council’s local office on 01770 600338 for further details.

In all areas, the Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) will close at 1pm on both Christmas Eve and Hogmanay, with last entry at 12.30pm. They will be closed on the Monday and Tuesday of each week.

Please visit the Council’s bin collection day website for information during the festive period and follow our social media channels for guidance on Christmas tree collections in your neighbourhood.

On the mainland and Cumbrae, real Christmas trees (in 5ft or less sections) can be left beside brown your bin from Monday, January 8 over the following two-week collection cycle. On Arran, real Christmas trees (in 5ft or less sections) can be deposited at the Brodick HWRC.

Try the scrunch test to work out if your wrapping paper can be recycled - it it stays in a ball it can be recycled in your blue bin
