In Focus: Internal Audit Awareness

From mental health to foster care, May has been a busy month for raising awareness on a host of important issues, but did you know May is also Internal Audit Awareness month?

Around the same time that Los Del Rio decided the world needed the Macarena, the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) decided the world needed something entirely different – International Internal Audit Awareness Month.

They did this to start spreading awareness about the value of internal audit. While internal audit may not conjure up the most exciting of thoughts, it is a profession which can still sometimes be shrouded in mystery.

Find out more about Internal Audit Awareness Month on the IIA website.

So what does the Council’s Internal Audit Team do exactly?

Laura Miller, Senior Manager (Audit, Fraud, Safety & Risk) tells us more:

“In a nutshell, internal audit is an independent, objective assurance and consulting service, designed to add value and improve an organisation’s operations. Our areas of focus are governance, risk management and internal control.

“While the majority of the team’s internal audit plan is dedicated to planned assurance work, we are also available to offer ad hoc insight and advice when services need us. This could be through projects, or smaller queries such as when you are looking to change your processes and would like some independent and objective advice.

“Please get in touch with Internal Audit at InternalAuditSM@north-ayrshire.gov.uk if there is anything we can help you with.”
